Three Potential Health Benefits of Social Support
Recent studies reinforce something many of us already know. Doctors and scientists have been shouting that there’s a real health benefit to having a social network of friends, family and a community who is supportive in your efforts to achieve in life, whether its losing weight, quitting smoking or succeeding at work. In a new article, the National Institutes of Health reviewed various studies connecting the benefits of social support to improved health and well-being, including more positive mental health.
“Wide-ranging research suggests that strong social ties are linked to a longer life. In contrast, loneliness and social isolation are linked to poorer health, depression, and increased risk of early death,” the article explains. It continues to explain that having varied positive social relationships supports:
- Stress relief and cardiovascular health-related risks,
- Improved immune response,
- Improved mood and sense of well-being.
It found that married couples live longer than single people, and it was also found that heart health was improved; the suggestion is that having the close support of a spouse fulfils some of the needs to be able to benefit from the positive impacts of social relationships; when one spouse improves their lifestyle,e the other is likely to adopt the same behaviours.
The article reads; “Other types of relationships are important, too. These can include friends, family, neighbours, co-workers, clubs and religious groups. Studies have found that people who have larger and more diverse types of social ties tend to live longer. They also tend to have better physical and mental health than people with fewer such relationships.”
The power of a social support system may also have the potential to transform the health of entire communities, in turn paying all kinds of dividends. Healthier communities mean fewer health problems, a more productive workforce and greater healthcare cost savings.
